The Original Father's Sword

The Father's Sword

Sometimes known as "The Master's Sword", in many ways the making, theft, and recovery of this sword is the key plot element of Conan The Barbarian.

Wrapping the Father's Sword gripThe opening titles show Conan's father, in a remote village of Cimmeria, forging the blade and carving the crossguard. Conan and his mother help operate the bellows during the forging of the sword, and Conan's mother wraps the grip of the sword with leather.

The opening sequence of this film and the detailed (though not always technically accurate) "making" of the Father's Sword has been credited by countless sword enthusiasts as the reason they became interested in swords, and by a large number of modern smiths who have helped create a modern Renaissance of the making and use of swords, as their own inspiration for becoming a swordsmith.

The sword, another striking design by production designer Ron Cobb, was actually made in Burbank, California by legendary sword and knifemaker Jody Samson.
