DT5154
The
sword of William Wallace, created by the maker of the film original,
Fulvio Del Tin.
This is the most authentic reproduction of this sword you can
buy. As a form of early claymore, this sword has no historical
provenance, though it is very similar to swords carried by the
Landesknecht (German mercenaries) much later. The blade,
of chrome vanadium steel, is diamond in cross-section with a flat
at the ricasso (base of the blade). The hilt has straight
quillons and a wide cuspidate quillon block, a leather wrapped
wooden grip, and a fig-shaped pommel. A truly awe-inspiring sword.

DT2133

One
of two swords ascribed to St. Maurice (Mauritius), this one now
resides in the Imperial Treasury in Vienna. This sword was later
decorated with engraving by Otto IV, but the original sword remains
an outstanding example of a Type XI sword, circa 1200 (This sword
is shown in plate 8 of Oakeshott's Archaeology of Weapons).
The faithful reproduction of this sword by the artisans of Del
Tin Antiche is a pleasure to hold. The heavy steel "brazil-nut"
pommel balances the heavy blade perfectly. It features a steel
crossguard, wooden grip wrapped with iron wire, and a chrome vanadium
steel blade with central fuller.

DT2120

Revered
as the coronation sword of the French Kings, and later gilded
and decorated by Napoleon, the original sword now rests in the
Louvre in Paris. In style more similar to 12th and 13th Century
swords, most scholars have doubted that it was indeed the sword
of Charlemagne (crowned October 9, 786 CE), although recent radiocarbon
tests have shown that it could have dated from his period.
This faithful reproduction, by the artisans at Del Tin Antiche,
features a lost-wax cast bronze grip and a deeply fullered blade
of chrome-vanadium steel. (This Del Tin sword made an appearance
in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.)

DT2140

The
original of this sword has been described as a "robust cut and
thrust sword" (Oakeshott Type XIV) and has been dated between
1350-1400 CE.
The pommel on this sword (now on display at the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, New York) is inscribed with a quotation from Virgil's
Aeneid: "sunt hic etiam sua praemia laudi," translated
by scholars at the Met as: "Here too virtue has its due reward."
The quotation is from the Aeneid, Book I, lines 461-462:
Aeneas has arrived in Carthage and sees a temple which has wall-paintings
depicting scenes from the Trojan War, including the sad end of
his home.
"Even (etiam) here (hic) are (sunt) the rewards (praemia) for
virtue (laudi); [even here] tears (lacrimae) for our misfortunes
(rerum), and human troubles (mortalia) touch (tangunt) the mind
(mentem)."
The Trojans and the Greeks get praise/rewards for their bravery
on the battlefield here, in the form of the war being memorialized
on the temple walls, in a land far away from the battles. But,
they are also reminded of all the suffering that they have experienced.
(translation and notes courtesy of Ruth Sameth.)
This
sword can be seen on page 46 of Swords and Hilt Weapons
and is still on display at the Met. This reproduction, by Del
Tin Armi Antiche, features a broad triangular steel blade of chrome
vanadium steel with a fuller running two-thirds of its length.
The crossguard, made of steel, arcs downward toward the blade,
and the wooden grip is bound with leather.

DT2142

Becoming
popular in the late 13th and early 14th Centuries CE, this type
of sword was found to give the extra leverage and length needed
to combat advances in armor.
The elongated grip gave the room to use the sword with two hands,
though the balance still allowed a horseman to use it one-handed
as well. This 14th Century example features a steel wheel pommel
and crossguard and a long wooden grip wrapped with leather.
The long blade, of chrome vanadium steel, has a fuller running
two-thirds of its length.
